Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Limited, the Nigerian pioneer in automobile manufacturing, continues to reaffirm its position as a leader in the Nigerian automotive industry. Founded by Innocent Ifediaso Chukwuma and based in Nnewi, Anambra, the company has successfully diversified its production from passenger vehicles such as MPVs, pickup trucks and SUVs to commercial vehicles such as garbage trucks, buses and military vehicles. Innoson has also demonstrated a strong commitment to innovation, introducing compressed natural gas (CNG) powered vehicles, a CNG conversion plant and is currently planning the production of electric vehicles.
Innoson and its network of strategic collaborations
Innoson’s success is underpinned by a strong network of partnerships. The company has forged strategic alliances with the Government of Sierra Leone, the Federal Government of Nigeria, as well as the State Governments of Abia, Gombe and Anambra for the supply of vehicles, and also with the Nigerian Air Force for the supply of fighter aircraft parts. These partnerships have been instrumental in driving the development of the automotive industry in Nigeria and ensuring the supply of components and raw materials. In addition, collaboration with the University of Nigeria Nsukka has enabled Innoson to develop cutting-edge agricultural technology, producing 20 HP tractors under the IVM Lion brand.
International expansion: a new chapter
However, it is Innoson’s recent international expansion that has captured the attention of the automotive industry at a regional level. The company announced in 2022 a new strategic agreement with the Government of Sierra Leone to establish an assembly plant in Freetown, further consolidating relations with the Government of Sierra Leone following the agreement for the supply of armored vehicles worth $4.7 million. This initiative makes Innoson a multinational company with permanent operations in two countries and consolidates its position as a key player in the African automotive market.
